The truth about opportunity is that connections count. Whether you’re born with them or forge them, knowing people who can guide, support and widen what’s possible—is critical. Youth Summit is a program that mingles members of Detroit’s Youth Organizations with heads of business and government. In other words, current leaders, meet future leaders.

THE PURPOSE

We share goals and resources, discuss challenges and crack open opportunities. The work done at the Summit is about nurturing Detroit’s revitalization plans, from all angles. Youth Summit Conference 2019 established a Pipeline of Opportunity for career development and community involvement. It’s about connecting and bettering.

THE PROGRESSION

Youth Summit Conference 2019 established a Youth Summit Leadership Council composed of high school-age students who represent a variety of organizations throughout Detroit, as well as key business and community leaders. The Youth Summit Leadership Council meets throughout the year to build on the goals established during our inaugural conference and to provide year-round support to teens and community leaders.

THE DAY’S AGENDA

  • Networking, Town Hall discussions and Breakout Sessions among Detroit’s youth and business - community - civic – educational leaders

  • Agenda Topics:

    • The Mayor’s Revitalization Plan: Neighborhoods & Jobs

    • Education: Detroit’s long-term plans for improving education & opportunities today

    • Business growth, training & career opportunities

    • Personal & Professional Finance

    • Gentrification: What Detroit is doing to keep Detroit Detroit

    • Barriers in Life - Perception v. Reality

  • Detroit Virtual Tour-Film, narrated by Terry Campbell, Regional Manager, Office of U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow

  • Creation of and Setting Goals for Youth Summit Board

  • Reception

  • Audience: Youth organization leaders and high school age members, state and local government representatives, educational leaders, foundation representatives, business and community leaders.

THE OUTCOMES

  • Empower Detroit’s youth to achieve with the support of the community

  • Connect students, business and community leaders to create a vision for a better Detroit

  • Activate local business leaders to become involved with mentoring and fostering youth involvement in the revitalization of Detroit

  • Collaborate to deepen relationships among youth organizations, educators, community and government leaders to focus on youth direction together

  • Create a Network for driving forward ideals of revitalization
